I decided to watch the show Raising Hope, because it is a show I am very unfamiliar with. I do not know any of the characters or even the premsis of the show. Prior to watching, i did not read anything in regards to the show to give me any indication what might be happening.
The show has a family of a mom, dad, grandmother and 2 boys from what I am assuming during the interactions around the dinner table. There are many different non-verbal cues that happen throughout the scenes. In the beginning, the one boy spends time getting leaves out of a pool and another boy comes past and blows the leaves back into the pool. The boy reacts by throwing his pole and walking away with his hands in the air.
There were many other non-verbal gestures, such as placing a finger on your nose which in my understanding means "not it" and would indicate the last person to put their finger on their nose would have to do what was indicated. There were also lots of facial expressions that clearly showed joy, disgust, or shock such as when a girl he picked up at night was on the news. He also goes to visit her in jail, and is shocked to see she is pregnant. I am assuming he did not know this woman until she got into his car that one night.
The characters used proximity, as the family would stand close to each other at times. They also used gestures to emphasize what statment they were making.
When i turned the sound back on, I was correct with my assumptions. The boy quit his job in the beginning, and was livign with his family. He did not know the woman before she got into his car and she ended up having his baby while in prison.
This activity showed that actions have a huge impact on how we interpret a situation, and the more emphasis a person has in their hand motions the more urgent the message such as the "I quit" hands up motion, or the boss at the supermarket trying to get his worker back inside.

Hello Casssie,
From reading your blog, I learned that using non-verbal gestures in this particualr show helped you to make the correct assumptions about the characters in the show. Sometimes, nonverbal gestures can bring better understanding to certain situations.
Hello Cassie, I was able to interpret the show I watched in non-verbal and verbal. It shows that we have the ability to read non-verbals and as an advantage we can see things in other people as they communicate to us daily. Great Post!
Hi Cassie,
I was also suprised how much information could be taken from non-verbal gestures and behaviors. I use to work with Autistic children, and I think the reason why some Austistic/Asperger children have a lot of problems in social situations is because their inability to read people's non-verbal communication. I think it would be very difficult if we were unable to make sense of these behaviors. Nice post!
Hi Cassie,
You seem to pick up on a lot of non verbal cues! Not sure I would have known about the finger on the nose.
