"Every early learning program should be staffed by teachers and providers who can and do establish warm and caring relationships with children, tend the fires of children’s’ curiosity and love of learning, and foster their development and readiness for school."  -Marcy Whitebook
No single ingredient -- preparation, support or reward -- stands on its own and reform is needed across all three -- the very areas where we shortchange the early learning workforce and thus the children they serve. -Marcy Whitebook
' If formal instruction is introduced too early, too intensely and too abstractly, the children may indeed learn the instructed knowledge and skills, but they may do so at the expense of the disposition to use them'
Lilian Katz Ph. D
Experts generally agree that taking all opportunities to read books and other material aloud to children is the best preparation for their learning to read. The pleasures of being read to are far more likely to strengthen a child's desire to learn to read than are repetitions of sounds, alphabet drills, and deciphering uninteresting words. - Lilian Katz, Ph. D
Of course children benefit from positive feedback. But praise and rewards are not the only methods of reinforcement. More emphasis should be place on appreciation—reinforcement related explicitly and directly to the content of the child's interest and efforts. - Lilian Katz, Ph. D

The quote from Lillian is the best of them all to me because a child does learn and acquire reading skill from being read to daily, is so much better than drilling them.Interactive stories are very effient too, their learning of new words and sounds without the drilling.
Very good quotes Cassie. It is important that we as educators have a passion for children and families, and understand that we must be willing to advocate for families and children in our community.
The quote by Renetta Cooper reveals that often times in advocating for children, people desire for their viewpoint to selected as the "best" way to handle a situtation. However, this may not always be true. We have to step aside from our own agendas and come to an agreement to do what is best for the children that we are advocating for.
Marcy Whitebook describes all of the qualities that an exceptional child care provide has. Someone who has a warm, caring personality who works hard to provide the best possible early childhood education for the children. This is the type of early education that all children deserve.
I agree with Gwen, I think the quote about reading to children is so powerful. I think it speaks to me because often parents drill as an appropriate way of instruction and don't understand why it isn't used in my class. You have many great Quotes. Good Motivation for what we do.
Gwen,I love your last quote. It truly isn't about us. When we, as a society, come to that understanding, I believe we can accomplish more for our children and our world.
